Top Celtics News

  • Celtics' Dillon Mitchell: Ready for rookie campaign

Mitchell is likely to serve as emergency depth for the Celtics in his rookie season.

Boston signed the St. John's product to one of its two-way roster spots after selecting him in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, which means the bulk of the forward's reps should come with the G League's Maine Celtics. The 22-year-old showed flashes during Summer League, averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals, 1.3 assists and 1.3 blocks in 26.0 minutes per game over his three appearances, and he notably enjoyed a six-steal performance during the July 12 win over Charlotte.

  • Celtics' Chris Cenac: Playing time could be limited

Cenac appears to be buried on the Celtics' depth chart ahead of his rookie season.

Boston signed Mitchell Robinson in free agency and still has Neemias Queta in the fold at center as well, likely leaving Cenac to fight for scraps with Luka Garza off the bench in 2026-27. Much like two-way player Amari Williams, Cenac's clearest path to steady action appears to be with the G League's Maine Celtics while the parent club is healthy.

  • Celtics' Hugo Gonzalez: Competing for starting role

Gonzalez has a chance to claim a larger role in 2026-27 after the Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the 76ers in exchange for Paul George.

Assuming Boston remains steadfast in keeping Payton Pritchard as its sixth man off the bench, the competition for the starting spot at shooting guard should come down to Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman. Gonzalez made only three starts to Scheierman's 20 last regular season, so the former is likely to need a standout training camp this fall to make inroads in the race for a spot in the first unit.

  • Celtics' Sam Hauser: More three-point attempts coming

Hauser's role could become more secure following Boston's offseason shakeup with the team swapping Jaylen Brown for Paul George and other assets, John Schuhmann of NBA.com reports.

While George is expected to absorb most of Brown's minutes, George's recent durability concerns may create additional opportunities for Hauser on the wing throughout the season. Hauser should continue to provide elite three-point shooting, with his fantasy value receiving a boost whenever George requires maintenance days or misses time.

  • Celtics' Payton Pritchard: New role incoming

Pritchard could benefit from additional offensive opportunities after Boston dealt Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia, John Schuhmann of NBA.com reports.

Although Paul George is expected to step into a starting role, Brown's departure creates extra ball-handling and scoring chances throughout the rotation, potentially allowing Pritchard to build on last season's breakout campaign. Increased minutes in three-guard lineups could help preserve his fantasy relevance despite George's arrival.

  • Celtics' Derrick White: Importance in Boston grows

White could see a slight uptick in offensive responsibility following Boston's acquisition of Paul George in exchange for Jaylen Brown and other assets, John Schuhmann of NBA.com reports.

George's ability to space the floor and operate off the ball should fit well alongside White. However, Brown's departure leaves significant shot-creation opportunities that White may be asked to fill. His versatile stat profile already gives him a high fantasy floor, and a modest increase in usage would further boost his value.

  • Celtics' Jayson Tatum: Top dog for Boston

Tatum (knee) should once again serve as the unquestioned centerpiece of Boston's offense after the Celtics traded Jaylen Brown for Paul George and other assets, John Schuhmann of NBA.com reports.

While George remains an effective two-way wing, he's unlikely to command the same offensive workload as Brown at this stage of his career, potentially leading to even greater scoring and playmaking responsibilities for Tatum. Assuming he returns to full health, Tatum has a legitimate path to career-best usage in 2026-27.
